Located directly across the Potomac River from Washington DC near the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia is one of our US military’s cemeteries, Arlington National Cemetery. It was founded during the American Civil War on Arlington House property which belonged to the estate of Robert E. Lee’s wife Mary Anna (Custis) Lee, a relative of Martha Washington. On 624 acres 300,000 veterans and military fatalities from every one of the nation's wars are laid to rest in the cemetery, from the American Revolution through the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Along with another open cemetery, Mill Springs National Cemetery, it is the oldest military burial ground in the United States. Starting from the Smithsonian, we will explore the World War II Memorial and then visit the Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Wall. You will walk through history in Arlington Cemetery to view the John F. Kennedy gravesite and see the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Available Daily.
