Near Alexandria, Virginia, Mount Vernon was the plantation home of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Located on the banks of the Potomac River the neoclassical Georgian architectural styled mansion is built of wood. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association own and preserve the now National Historic Landmark and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property has more than a dozen outbuildings including the slave quarters, kitchen, stables, and greenhouse.
Old Town, the oldest and historic district section of eastern and southeast Alexandria VA on the Potomac River, was originally laid out in 1749. Old Town is primarily known for its historic town houses, art galleries, antique shops, and restaurants as well as Robert E. Lee's boyhood home, the Lee-Fendall House, a replica of George Washington's townhouse, Gadsby's Tavern, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop, and the Torpedo Factory art gallery. Another historic feature in Old Town is Market Square, highly landscaped with a fountain was once the location of the second largest slave market in the U.S. has a farmers market each Saturday.
